Animal Welfare Initiative - "Advancing Life Sciences through Caring"
Toxikon is committed to being one of the world leaders in the life science and technology community and places the utmost focus on the humane care and use of research animals. Our mission is to provide the finest level of animal care and technological support to help our clients create new and safe medical advancements. All employees at Toxikon accept the moral and legal obligation to care for our animals with the utmost compassion and respect. We recognize that providing high quality living conditions, reducing stress, and humane care play integral roles in the validity, quality and efficiency of research. Superior animal care equals superior science.
We accomplish our Animal Welfare Initiative through employee orientation, annual training, annual review of animal policies and procedures, and strictly adhering to animal laws and regulations. Toxikon commits to using alternative scientific methods to replace whole animal systems, refine techniques to minimize pain and distress, and reduce the numbers of animals used in research wherever and whenever possible.
Toxikon’s Animal Welfare Initiative is based on 3 Cs.
Caring – We respect and recognize the sacrifice that all research animals make for the benefit of society. Hundreds of thousands of lifesaving advances in medicine and safety are the direct result of animal research. To honor that sacrifice Toxikon treats all its animals with the utmost care and respect. Toxikon continually reinforces this caring and respect of the animals through training and mentoring.
Communication – Toxikon recognizes the need for continual reinforcement of the humane treatment of research animals. This is provided in skill trainings, posters, and annual law and regulations training. We encourage all employees to find new and better ways to improve animal welfare and promote the sharing of those ideas. We also encourage the participation of all employees in the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee. Toxikon also provides avenues for reporting of employees that do not follow these policies, and we employ a zero tolerance policy for any animal welfare violations.
Commitment – Every Toxikon employee is committed to upholding these values and principles to the best scientific standards. This is reinforced through a written Caring Commitment form filled out by every new employee and through continuing education during internal trainings, webinars and off-site workshops. Toxikon employees must continually seek to improve and refine their skills to provide state of the art animal care and scientific techniques.
